'Reminiscence' Photo Exhibition - International Week 2019

Photos do more than just capturing the moment: they carry memories and emotions. In this photography exhibition, we are presenting photos of places JCR students have been to that gave them good memories. We’ve got pictures taken in China, Norway, Spain, New Zealand... We love the world.

Pari island, Indonesia. We‘ve been friends since we were 6. And I’ve been living abroad for 6 years. Yet whenever I go home, they are always there - up for the mountains and up for the beach. Elhana Sugiaman

Wanaka is the place I feel most at home. It is a small, but increasingly popular, town in the South Island of New Zealand. My family has lived there for four generations. This photo was taken from the top of the Mount Iron track, and is of my cousin and her dog. I love doing this walk when I first arrive back because I’m reminded of old memories on Lake Wanaka and can also see new developments in the town. Isabel Donaldson

At the time there was nothing better than having an empty double-decker to take me home from school. I’d put on my earphones, feel the glow of the setting sun, and fall asleep, my head bobbing against the window.

Xiao Guilin existed in a corner of Singapore like it was in a separate world. You could come here and look at the jagged rocks towering from across the lake, and feel small - like surrendering to some higher being. Joy Wang

This is my favourite café in Shanghai. Over the summer after I graduated from high school, I spent most of my days here, drinking and learning about coffee. The person in the photo used to be the head barista of the café. Along with some other baristas I got to know while I was there, we are now really good friends. I really miss them. Can’t wait to go back to Shanghai!

This is a shot of an old restaurant on South Shanxi Road in Shanghai. The area is my favourite in all of Shanghai. I just love to walk in the streets, surrounded by shady sycamores. There are a lot of great cafes, bars, and restaurants in the neighbourhood. I can literally spend a whole day there without getting bored. Mingfang Zhang

I took this photo just down the hill from the bar where my parents got engaged on the Greek island of Symi, twenty-eight years later. The entire island is painted in gorgeous bright pastels, but most memorable was the name of the bar, run by a small English lady and so called... Jean and Tonic.

Taichung’s Fengjia night market - one of Taiwan’s biggest night markets, and a synaesthetic assault everyone should experience at least once. The list of things to buy and games to play could go on forever, but as a taster, over five hours, food sampled included fried sweet potato balls, stinky tofu, perfectly seasoned grilled mushroom, cheesy potato, taro, douhua - a sweet tofu substance, and finally a bowl of refreshing shaved ice to round off a humid night under Taiwan’s setting sun. I live in Cyprus with my grandmother, in a small, rural village on the south coast. When I’m in Oxford I miss seeing the Mediterranean sea every day. Aphrodite’s Rock is where legend says Aphrodite was born, rising from the sea to live on Cyprus. It's on the western side of the island, so we had a trip over there and I swam with sea turtles in the town we stayed in and got this photo on our way home.

I went to Malaysia and Thailand this year for my 21st birthday. While we were in Kuala Lumpur, the stairway to Batu Caves, which was normally a plain stone, was illegally painted rainbow colours. The numbers of tourists to Batu in the days after exploded! It was pure luck that I got to be one of the first to see it. Batu caves contains a Hindu temple and is dedicated to Murugan, who’s statue stands at 140ft in front of the staircase to the caves.

I went to Thailand as part of a trip for my 21st birthday, visiting Chiang Mai and Bangkok. I went to Thailand several times when I was younger and it was amazing to go back now I was old enough to appreciate it all. Wat Chang Man is the oldest temple in Chiang Mai, built in 1297, and the Chedi itself is the oldest part of the complex. It has stone elephants on the second level the whole way around, seemingly supporting the whole structure above on their backs. It shows how important elephants are to Thai people and Buddhists. After a week of volunteering in a local school, my group and I hiked to a local temple and watched the sunrise over the iconic Indonesian architecture.

I was lucky enough to travel to Paris for my 18th birthday and enjoyed exploring the art quarter of Montmartre - there were so many talented performers, musicians, and artists.

After spending the night camping at the base of this sulfur volcano, Ijen, in Indonesia, we were woken at 1 am to start our hike up. It was pitch black and, in order not to loose each other, our group of 13 had to walk in single file with just headtorches for guidance. Hours later we arrived at the top in time to watch the sunrise over the iconic blue lake! Harriet Wall

A very pretty Indonesian street kitten which was born in the back of a restaurant on the beach (very hygienically, I hope...). Whilst I was in Bali there were six earthquakes, two of very high magnitudes, and I always hoped these little kittens were okay. Liliana Hennessey

Isles of Scilly – I visit the islands every year, they are the most idyllic islands in the UK and my absolute favourite place to relax with my friends and family; although, the sea is not as warm as it looks! Phoebe Jowett Smith
