Message from a Student

Hey, I’m Andrea and I’m a 2nd year Music student. For Prelims in 1st year, you will be expected to take six subjects. This includes four compulsory topics, which are comprised of - two special topics, Musical Analysis and Critical Listening, and Techniques of Composition and Keyboard Skills. You are also expected to take two optional topics from a list that you will find in the Prelims Handbook. So, in total you would produce three written papers and one ‘take-away’ paper, a practical examination, and depending on your optional topics a recital/portfolio of compositions/essays. In your 2nd and 3rd year, you will be expected to take eight subjects and be examined at the end of your 3rd year. This includes two compulsory topics (each topic includes three different fields), and six optional topics which you will be able to choose from a list in the FHS Handbook. At the end of 3rd year you would produce three or more written papers (two compulsory and one chosen from three optional topics) and a combination of take-away papers, portfolio submissions, recitals and practical tests, depending on the optional topics chosen. The weekly teaching structure is about one or two tutorials in college (sometimes more, out of college), four to six lectures, as well as having time for independent practice/rehearsals and opportunities to do workshops etc.
